There are steps in each design, first step is stitched only onto the batting, then batting is trimmed, so you dont have bulky batting the seam allowance, then the fabric is added, and the design is stitched. I used lycra for this quilt as its just a lap quilt and I really wanted to capture the embossed look of this open design, I used quilters thin batting, but you can use a bit thicker
